We were absolutly terrible, 1st half was appauling but we picked it up in the 2nd half and played some really good football creating some excellent chances just a shame we couldn't6 get players on the ends of crosses or we'd of won.

Result not important today due to the nasty looking injury to Steve Connors, lets hope its nothing too serious and he'll be back soon.

I didn't think we played badly today but after Worksop let in 6 on the opening Saturday followed by another 4 last Saturday I think we were possibly expecting to get a hatfull. In fact neither side really created anything resembling a clear cut chance until the 95th minute when Scales was given a goden opportunity to win it but miskicked with only the keeper to beat. Avenue had a stoewall penalty turned down after about 5 mins when Hall was about to pull the triger but was sythed down from behind. Why the referee didn't give it he alone knows. We conceded a soft goal from a corner and Connors scored our equaliser from a free kick just out side the box. Worksop were a very dirty side and could have been reduced to 8 men had the referee done his job properly. The worst foul by far was their number 14 on Connors near the end which led to Connors being carried off on a stretcher. If I had been the number 14 I wouldn't have awaited for the card I would have just walked off. As it was the ref didn't even book him. We will now no doubt have to do without Connors for several games which is a massive blow bearing in mind how we played last season when he was out injured. Patterson and Hall played alright but where was Rudd? I would like to see all three start because they are all good footballers. My biggest worry remains the defence which doesn't look solid. If we can get that sorted I think we can finish in the top 5. If not we will drop a lot points against the better teams in the division. The next 3 games are against Eastwood, FC and Buxton all tough games. I hope we can bring in a top notch defender quickly.

team spirit seems to be missing to me,too much moaning when passes go astray, heads turn and look to the ground, and Cammys constant arm waving at Worsnop is getting boring, whether he kicks it long, wide or even throws it out,hes on his case, yet when Ruffer gifts a short pass just outside our own box nothing his heard {or seen}from him.
Im worried that a few of the players dont have BPA at heart, they are just playing for the packet.
Tim P
Not really good enough today. If we are to get promotion we will have to start playing a lot better then that. We should have won today. I know it is early days but the last thing we want is to be playing catch up with the other sides. You are right John about the moaning. We have to accept we may not always get the best refs at this level but what is the point of the players moaning at them. The refs are not going to change their decision are they? Kev, I agree with you about the defence. We did look a little shakey at times. If we can't sure up the defence then I can see us finishing mis table this season.

The game against Eastwood on Saturday will be a massive game especially after they have stuck 5 past North Ferriby today. I hope we can at least get a draw.

I think Connors will be ok. He was in the club house after the game. Didn't look like he was struggling with an injury. Looked to be walking ok.
Denisov
A pity Rudd wasn't on the bench today. I thought Hall struggled second half. With Rudd to replace him for the last half hour i'm sure we'd have got the winner.

I was happy with Patterson's performance. He tried hard and didn't quite get the breaks. Had one shot in the first half brilliantly saved by their keeper. Of the rest Betteny, Graves, and Connors were the pick. Hotte looked a little rusty at the back. We seemed to miss Haran today. Ruffer seems to struggle to complete the 90 minutes.

For those not present Worksop picked up five bookings. I don't think we had one. They were very physical and got away with an awful lot. They were lucky nobody received red.

I think many people saw todays game as a home banker. It just goes to show that there will be very few easy games in the league this year. Despite two heavy defeats, Worksop have already drawn with Eastwood this season. Guiseley only managed a draw at home to Matlock today.

There's a long way to go. We need to take one game at a time. If the squad needs strengthening i'm sure the board will do their best.

Well I did something today I last did 43 years ago - I drove over the Pennines and went to watch Park Avenue play. First problem was finding the ground which meant I arrived five minues late. Better signing on match days would be a good idea. Not to mention some ideas on where it's best to park.

So was it a good game? No. Spoiled by Worksop's spoiling tactics which, to be fair to them, worked very well (if you are going to play like that) and got them a point they will be very happy with. It was clear in the last 20 minutes that they had settled for the point. But it got more exciting towards the end when Avenue might have got the winner with a bit more luck.

Avenue tactics in the first half were hopeless - in the air against the wind when it was clear that the muscle-y Worksop defence could be beaten by skill on the ground and by using the wings. There were far too many occasions when Avenue players did not compete for the ball and the midfield did not get a grip. The second half was much better.

I was impressed by Chris Hall but he did not always get the service he deserved.

The goalie? I have read some of the controversy about him and have never seen him play before. Sorry but I was not impressed, particularly at set pieces where he too often came and went back and seemed to me to end up in no-man's land. He made at least one good save but two of his punches out were feeble.

The Worksop goal was a real softie. Three set pieces in a row (one long throw and two corners) and any of them could (should) have resulted in a goal. The third did - a soft tap in with everyone stranded. What a mess. The goalie seemed to have no tactical control over the defence (and Worksop had five (or six?) big men in the box). Not impressive.

The Avenue free kicks near goal were mostly pathetic - apart from the one that produced the super Connors goal! Surely they can do better with most of them?

Two other comments. If a team is well organised and playing well, would it need quite so many and continuous instructions from the bench? There's a balance to be struck and leadership on the field is as important as leadership from the sidelines. Perhaps more so.

And the referee left something to be desired. He started booking Worksop players (three or four of them) then seemed to give up on it. If it was a fairly scrappy game he was partly to blame.

All in all quite an experience and something I thought I would never do again. And I thought the ground was nicer and neater than I had expected. Will I come again?

Well I got a red amber and black scarf for Christmas when I was about eight - obviously long disappeared. I bought another one this afternoon and I keep looking at it and thinking I've gone a bit daft in advancing years. So who knows? The FCUM match might be fun...

Can anyone explain the strange start to the season, win the first two games 4-0, then 1 point from the next two?

Christ alive! They're back.

Haven't you got some or other FCUM fan to argue the toss with? Looks like that particular love-in is over.

Funny isn't it how we didn't hear a peep from Adam or his ilk last week, but a couple of dodgy results and they start creeping out of the woodwork again.

You have to admit though "sideshow" that it was a poor performance today, especially from Ruffer.

Is it also true that Rudd didn't play due to "traffic problems" ???

Even if the M62 was shut, surely he could have made it for 3pm.

Or is he holed up in some Budapest jail for another form of "traffic"!!!!

Getting back to the game, why oh why did we continue where we left off against Hednesford with this pointless punted long ball? wacko.gif
When we play the ball on the carpet we are unbeatable.

Ruffer's apparently triangular shaped bonce and dodgy footwork left me with my head in my hands on several ocassions today along with many other fans around where i was stood. Hotte looked a little rusty but that is to be expected when the lad doesn't even get on as a sub normally. Haran and Hotte for me is the best option but i doubt Ruffer will be dropped unless he asks to be.

.......and what's with all the screaming from Banshee Cameron??? wacko.gif

Lets hope that there is an improvement for Eastwood and the visit of FC Utd or we will be severly punished.
Robert Terwilliger
Well, Irish Rover, I think that the season is long. With many a winding turn. That leads us to who knows where?

There will be many frustrations along the way, like in the last couple of days.

But we are fortunate in having being given a good side to support, and I believe that despite the high expectations it would be better if supporters did a little more supporting sometimes instead of complaining.

I am not aiming that at anyone in particular but let's let the manager manage, the players play and see where it gets us.

Things won't always go perfectly but on balance we're in good shape.
The Irish Rover
......totally agree "sideshow".

this is not a sprint but a marathon. wink.gif

i just don't see Ruffer's efforts helping the campaign, nor Cammy's constant screaming. sad.gif

Seemed to be a little more passion and noise from the Avenue faithful today but like you say, the majority of it was negative frustration really.

Lets see what next week's Saturday/Monday efforts bring before cancelling anyone's contracts though eh? blink.gif

Just to put you right on the Stewart Rudd senario, his missus was in a car accident with his two girls, as you can appreciate Stewart was not there today due to one of his kids been kept in hospital due to head injuries.... and Mark Haran has sickness and the Sh***ts as for the team, only 4 games in!!!!! seem to remember all the statements said last year ???? the mind boggles......

Johnxl- of course the team play predominately for the wage packet. We live in a selfish cash grabbing world, and they joined Avenue because of the money on offer. Few of the coaching staff and players come from Bradford or Yorkshire, and have no ties to the area, other than the club for which they play. Like most footballers they do have a degree of loyalty to their team, colleagues and supporters, and consequently a desire to win games and be successful. Apart from those occasional glory seekers, neither do we have any affinity to Manchester or Liverpool.

With regard to the “hootin and hollerin” from BOTH benches; such gesticulating is now commonplace in all levels of football. The smaller the crowd, the more noticeable it is; two benches resembling a troop of whooping baboons. I recently attended an FA cup game with an approximate gate of 150. Halfway through the second half, two mothers and prams out for a stroll, wandered through the gate to take a look. Five minutes later, one turned to the other and said “don’t they shout alot?” Bless :-)

Onto today’s game, and as I compose this monologue and read some recent posts, Mr. Tony Greaves and others have stolen my thunder. Save for Steve Connors, who was superb today, we seem to have learnt nothing from Hednesford. We hammered two light weight teams in Prescot and Matlock, and having now been presented with two big lumbering sides in Hednesford and Worksop, are devoid of ideas as to how we should break them down.

Can someone inform our potent forward line that these “tree trunk” defenders, possess the turning speed of an oil tanker, and instruct the midfield to play it through them on the ground. On one of the few occasions we had a good passing move; it led to the free kick from which we scored. Connors played it on the deck throughout and Worksop struggled when he had the ball. Mr. Greaves correctly makes the point, that we regularly lump the ball into the wind, and it’s always windy at Horsfall.

Does anyone recall the home game against Newcastle Blue Star last season? I think we won 2-0. I remember being shocked and pleasantly surprised with their speed of their pass and movement. But for a couple of decent forwards, they would have won that game with ease. We had just appointed our new manager and but for this, would have preferred Newcastle’s then outgoing manager, if this was the style of football he encouraged and produced. I cannot recall seeing such quality football in any Unibond league. I believe it was Tommy Cassidy, who had resigned due to their impending demotion.

Worksop are scratching for anything at the moment and I can understand their tactics. But for a great save from JW, they would have taken the three points today. Yet I agree with Tony’s comments, in that our keeper and defence are vulnerable, though we missed Haran- and Rudd.

So Mr. Killick, hope this has answered your question. To Mr. Greaves, it’s incredible to think you last attended an Avenue game, as I began supporting them. See you in another 43 years. Onto Eastwood Town- yet another “land of the giants” Phew.

Must go now, Andy Murray’s just phoned for advice on how to win the US open. Anyone for tennis?

I have got to say that was one of the worst teams we have played. They were by far the luckiest team around for not get must of their players sent off

Having had a free afternoon yesterday i went along to the game and was pleasantly surprised at times with how well you played even though you didn't get the result that you would have wished for. Worksop had a game plan and it was pretty obvious that part of that was to stop you playing your football. For me you had the best four players on the pitch by a country mile in Hall, Patterson, Connors and Betney.

It was apparent that Hall has played the game proffesionally. He has a fantastic touch on the ball and held it up very well. Patterson was industrious up front, working his socks off and on a few occasions was too quick for the linesman when turning his defender. Theres goals for fun with these two if you can provide the service to them that at times was a little lacking yesterday. Connors put in an almost Stevie Gerrard esque performance and was superb until he was obviously taken out by a awful challange that if i'm right didn't even warrant a booking in the ref's eye's. Boy are you going to miss him. The sooner he is back the better for you lot. Betney had a great game out wide and beat his man on numerious occasions, putting some great balls into the box.

As soon as both teams came onto the pitch yesterday you could tell you were going to be in for a tough game. They were a very big side compared to you lot and it was obvious that they were going to play the Wimbledon way of the 90's. I thought you mixed it well with them though. In Connors and baker there was no sherking of challanges in the middle of the park and they gave as good as they got against bigger and more physical players.

The back if anything is where i would be concerned. Not through ability but in height. From the people i spoke to at the game yesterday you desperately missed Haran. The few games i attended last season, Lincoln Adams, was superb for you and would do a good job for you this season if he was still with you. Their number nine towered over anything you had to offer and was winning everything in the air. Had they had the quality of a Hall or a Patterson up front feeding off his knock downs they could have run out comfortable winners.

I don't know what game the referee was watching yesterday but it wasn't the one i was! I thought you could easily have had two penalties in the first half. The first when Hall was obviously brought down when through on goal and the second when Patterson was held back again when through on goal. For me the officials were dire throughout and missed many things. How their captian stayed on the field god only knows.

Overall i thought it was a gritty performance from you lot against a very rough and ready looking Worksop team. Connors is a trojan and drove you on in the middle of the park and was man of the match for me. I think a true reflection of how good you really are will be when you play the likes of FC United, when football will rule the day and not the awful bully boy tactics the likes of Worksop and many more teams in your league have to offer. Get yourselves a couple of "bruisers" at the back and with everything else you have to offer especially a fit Connors and you could well find yourselves playing at a higher level next season.

I think that was a good overview of the game i agree about the ref. i think he needs to go home and read the rule book. I do hope Connors is not out for long as he the man of the match for me.
