Brighouse Town v Bradford Park Avenue - Brighouse pleased despite Park defeat
Impressive: Shaun Gibbons, left, was in great form for Brighouse Town last night
Brighouse Town 0
Bradford Park Avenue XI 1
THE result may have gone against them, but that was the only minus on an evening when Town assistant Darren Attwood pronounced himself "exceptionally pleased" with his side's performance.
Attwood, at the reins while boss Mark Brier takes a short break in preparation for the start of the competitive stuff when Brighouse make their Northern Counties East bow in just 11 days' time, was delighted with the performance of his side and even more pleased that he gave a good run out to every one of a squad of 23 players on the night.
"I was very happy with the way things went," said Attwood.
"We bossed it for the first 20-25 minutes and then started to make a lot of changes, but even then we were still in control up to the final third.
"They hardly had a shot on goal throughout and though we didn't have many clear cut chances apart from a couple of dangerous crosses which almost got us something, I have to be pleased with the general standard of performance."
Park Avenue will be playing their football three levels above Town next term, so even though the side they sent to St Giles Road consisted mostly of reserve team regulars supplemented by a handful of youth team players, they represented a stern test.
But Brighouse came through it well in a hard fought game of few chances, the only goal coming on 74 minutes when a speculative free kick rebounded off the woodwork and found the net via unlucky keeper Jason Kirby.
And Attwood was buoyant despite the scoreline, reserving special praise for the likes of Glen Lee, Shaun Gibbons, Ben Charlesworth, Ryan Brooke and Tony Nicholson, who on that showing look likely to be first team regulars in the coming league campaign.
Nicholson initially skippered the side with regular captain Paul Moore taking over when he was introduced later in the game, and the experimental partnership of Ryan Bucley and Jordan Pettifor also looked lively.
And with the pitch in fine condition and the squad coming through without any injuries or bookings, Brier's right hand man has plenty to be happy about as he prepares for the next pre season run out against Otley Town on Saturday.
