Avenue's goal could have been Matty James not Aiden Savory. I'm getting mixed info from those at the game!

Unbelievable! Why do they make it so hard????

Still, just the points we needed - a win on Saturday against Durham (surely, surely, surely!!!) and we'll be up with the peloton and still games in hand on most.

This season is not over yet by any means.

Tony

PS And Stocksbridge 2 Boston 1. Incredible. Every time a team looks like they are making the running at the top they fall into a hole. It's all to play for.

Final result didn't reflect our domination tonight Tony. We won most tackles and were first to the ball everytime. Whitby had three shots on target all night and scored with two, an unstoppable screamer from the edge of the box by Beadle and a tap in last minute, when a toe-poke came off Dicko's chest.

At other end both Aiden and Matty were impressive up front in absence of Hall tonight. First goal was excellent first touch by Savoury, which wrong footed two defenders and allowed him to turn and shoot into far corner. Second was wonderful counter-attack down right, where Matty crossed low into box and Aiden side footed into net. Smallest man on park, Gibson, got third with a header when pinpoint cross from Baldry, found him unmarked on penalty spot. In between James lobbed keeper only for it to come off bar and O'Brien and Savoury had shots tipped over also.

No complaints about underachievers or non-commitment tonight, all ran their socks off IMO. Toss up between James and Baldry for MoM, but all earned their wages at a very difficult midweek venue. Well earned and deserved three points.

Yep, played really well against a physical team. Played well on sat but this was a lot better all round team performance with everyone playing well. Matty James looks a different player in his new position. Anyone whose seen the last 3 home performances and how bad we were (and thought the season was over) should go on sat v Durham and see the difference under John Deacy. They say all teams have a bad patch during the season, well maybe we have had ours, a good win on sat, hopefully a top 6 position, games down to one a week, promotion is on the cards.

For those who couldn't make it last night, this was a very good performance by the boys. Make no mistake about it Whitby were well beaten. Had the score been 5 or 6-2 they couldn't have complained. We scored three lovely goals, hit the bar (Savory), had two efforts brilliantly saved by their keeper (O'Brien & Savory), had a header cleared off the line (Iqbal), and a stunning 30 yarder (Gibson) whistled narrowly wide with the keeper well beaten. Beadle's first was a beauty. The only downside was conceding a sloppy second in time added on. If we really want that promotion this season we have to stop conceding goals like that. On another day that kind of defending will cost us points.

I just hope the lads can continue in this vein. A thoroughly professional performance is required on Saturday to see off Durham. We need to get the game won early (Kendal scored 5 in the first 19 minutes), which would enable us to rest certain key individuals later in the game and give the lads on the bench a run out.

Avenue were well supported last night. I would not be suprised if there were 80 to 100 fans made the journey. Well done to all concerned.

Promotion is certainly possible this season. Give the team, the management, and the board your full support.

Good wins against Stocksbridge and Whitby, together with an expected success against Durham, will see Avenue well positioned in the top half. If our games in hand are also won, only three or four teams will be above us in the league. From reports, it’s also good to read we appear to have controlled much of the play against SPS and Whitby.

But returning to a previous hobby horse, if promotion is to be achieved, we must start beating some of our promotion rivals. Over last season and this (to date) we rarely win against these teams, and the reason we cannot secure a regular place in the top four or five.

Last season we achieved just one success over a top five club, and took only eight points from a possible thirty. Losing four of these games and drawing the rest, meant our rivals pulled away from us. Our only real successes were in the games against Guiseley.

Again this term we have failed to beat the teams expected to be challenging come April- Kendal, Ashton, Boston and Ferriby. Whilst Stocksbridge have done well, and our win against them a good one, I don’t think they will be in the final mix.

During the 07/08 season, we picked up five wins from nine games against the other top five teams, and in the process collected sixteen points from a possible twenty seven- then struggled against some of the lesser teams. The trend seems to have changed.

While looking at the results from 07/08, some home attendances surprised me- compared to present day. This may have been due to successful runs, and there being a number of free tickets flying about, but some of these attendances against lower clubs were very unusual, when also considering they took place during the winter. Maybe they were massaged, though the current financial crisis may also be taking a toll, together with our hitherto poor form.

Attendances prior – and directly following these games were much lower, then picked up for the promotion run-in.

Report - by Andy Baxter - A mild October evening greeted Whitby Town and Bradford Park Avenue who adorned the Turnbull in their very bright flourescent yellow kit, with both sides in need of 3 valuable points.

Straight from the kick off, it was evident that the game would be played at a frantic pace and unfortunately for Whitby, it was Bradford PA who controlled most of the game. The opening goal only took the visitors 5 mins to score when a ball over the top of the Whitby defence found the dangerous Aiden Savory, who had no hesitation in driving a low, angled shot into the far corner of the net past David Campbell.

Whitby found themselves mainly on the back foot and struggled to match Bradford PA's speed on and off the ball. However, they equalised on 15 minutes after a throw in to Danny Brunskill was layed off to the incoming Jimmy Beadle, who, from the corner of the area, struck a superb shot which rocketed into the roof of the visitors net.

But Bradford PA only seemed to lift another gear, and continued to pile on the pressure as they strove to regain their lead. A teasing run from Savory ended with captain, Simon Baldry, forcing Campbell to produce a great save. Then, with 28 minutes on the clock, an almost identical re-run of the opening goal again saw the ball beat the Whitby defence and Matty James' angled shot fly narrowly close to the left hand post. Two minutes later, James again came close when his first time lob over the advancing Campbell saw the ball agonisingly bounce on top of the bar to deny him a goal.

The visitors continued to rain down on the Whitby goal with a well hit 35 yard effort from Luke Gibson whistling past Campbell's left hand post. But Bradford PA then got their deserved reward with a low cross from the right, beating the Whitby defence and Savory was there again, to side foot home from close range.

Whitby emerged in the 2nd half looking brighter and a neat interchange between Brunskill and Tony Hackworth, saw the Whitby captain's shot bring out a good ssave from keeper Stephen Dickinson, only seconds later for the ball to travel the full length of the pitch and the resultant half volley from Savory forced Campbell into action again, tipping the ball over the bar to deny the on form striker his hat trick.

Brunskill did manage a half turn in the box but his shot flew wide and moments later, a nice through ball from Matty James allowed Luke Gibson to shoot narrowly over the Whitby bar. Bradford PA continued their relentless pressure, playing sharp, attacking football and giving Whitby somewhat of a lesson. Whitby Manager, Harry Dunn then made 2 changes as Alex Gildea and Karl Charlton were replaced by Craig Gott and Liam Gildea.

But the entertaining and impressive Bradford PA rounded off their winning night with another goal to surely seal the 3 points from a nicely weighted cross from the right which saw a glancing header from Luke Gibson fly past the diving Campbell. Not suprisingly, it took Whitby until the 84th minute of the second half to register an effort on goal when Liam Gildea struck a low 20 yard shot which forced keeper, Dickinson, to save at his near post. Gildea was then called into action on his own goal line moments later, to clear the ball from Gibson's shot and with 3 additional minutes shown, a late Whitby goal was scored when a shot from Brunskill was only parried by Dickinson, and Beadle was there to force the ball home from close range for his and Whitby's second goal. But it was too late to have any chance of an equaliser.

After the game, many Whitby supporters commented that based on this match, Bradford PA were the best side to appear at the Turnbull this season and when I spoke to the Whitby Manager, Harry Dunn after the game, he said (quote) " They were much sharper than us, but there were some very disappointing performances out there from some Whitby players. There will now be some new players coming in to replace a few of those not performing well enough".

We therefore eagerly await to see what transpires from Harry's comment in the forthcoming weeks ahead but there was certainly no doubting that based upon this match, his team were beaten by the much sharper, fitter and skillfull set of players of Bradford PA.
