A peak into the week beginning 17th September

17th September 1927 was derby day in the city of Bradford with Avenue making the short trip across the city. It turned out to be a 5 goal thriller with Avenue just edging the win by 3 goals to 2. McLean, McDonald and Quantrill were the hero's of the day by grabbing the goals in front of 37,059 at Valley Parade. It was to be the largest crowd Avenue were to play in front of during the season. McDonald went onto to score 29 goals during that 1927/1928 season as Avenue were to be crowned Division three (north) champions

Avenue played host to Hull City at Park Avenue on the 17th September 1957. Avenue had not won in six matches but you wouldn't have known as Avenue were to fire four past Hull that day in a 4-1 victory watched by 7,102. Amongst the goals that day were Smith 2, Kendall and Ward. Five days later Avenue were to inflict Darlington's heaviest defeat on them at Fetthams that season as the Avenue ran out 5-1 winners. Smith made it five goals in two games by grabbing a hat-trick, the other goals came from Ward and Anders.

The 17th September saw Avenue at home to Lincoln United. The game finished 1-1 in front of 192 with the Avenue goal coming from Regan. A trip to Gretna 3 days later was to end in a one nil defeat

My Dad told me about this game, it was just after he had been demobbed. The second half was played in a howling gale to Avenues advantage. When the result came out everybody thought it was a mis-print.
